Discover the Origins of Sci-Fi

The rise of science fiction as a genre may be as important as the discovery of science itself. Before there was a word for science; fantasy, myth, legend, and truth were often mixed together on the printed page. While there are particular ancient tropes that have become sci-fi staples (mad scientists, jaunts through space, etc), calling something written before The Enlightenment science fiction (or even proto science fiction) usually leads to some arguments. Can fantasies with no foot in speculative reality be called Science Fiction?

The purpose of this site is to examine the roots of science fiction so that we may understand the human transition into nothing less than the modernist mode of scientific thinking. It is the responsibility of those that take such subjects seriously to discuss genre history and meaning, as well as to take a striking look at the way deviant alchemy turned to scientific method.
